3 ways to spot a comfort zone and how to get out of there
SONIA VITIELLO| the 28th of July 2023
I was spending some time out with friends and a discussion came on board.
Life has ups and downs, sometimes we let ourselves sink in the quotidianly of it because we feel comfortable.
We rather spend time complaining about something we are not happy about than trying to change it.
“Taking a decision is so hard!” said Debs
And that’s where most of the time, we get stuck.
We become slaves of our comfort zone, we are afraid to leave it.
We wonder what is going to happen once we move out, we are not ready to commit to a new language course, we are afraid to leave a job position for another as we don’t know how is it going to be!
We blow hot and cold!
Let’s step back for a second, what exactly is a comfort zone? Is that the real problem?
As you well guessed, (hooray!), the comfort zone represents both physical and mental space where we feel safe.
For instance, the comfort zone is like a familiar space where we live our routine. An environment where we are comfortable, where anything that is different than usual is not accepted and stays out.
The comfort zone looks like the best place we can ever be, far from any stressful activities.
That idyllic place is different by the individual, and it can also change over time, depending on how much we are ready to leave behind.
It all depends on our goals in life. The comfort zone is not necessarily a bad choice, but it can certainly be a millstone for our personal growth.
Why do we stay in our comfort zone? Why is it so hard to quit the comfort zone?
The word comfort says it all, it represents some sort of place where we don’t have to challenge ourselves, we don’t overthink and we don’t take risks. Who doesn’t love that?
You will probably agree that being part of a crowd it’s easier than being a speaker on stage. This is it! Staying in our comfort zone represents the easiest choice we can make in our lives.
How do we know it’s time to say goodbye to our comfort zone?
To good to be true, but there are few signals that can help us realize it’s time to change the way to live our lives.
The main signals to help us spot if we are trapped in our comfort zone are three and are the following
SIGNAL NUMBER ONE: Our life is repetitive, a bit too much!
We are absorbed in some sort of chain: home-work-repeat.
There is anything wrong with that? Absolutely not, in fact as I mentioned before, “that idyllic place is different by individual”
We are responsible for our own lives and decisions. We can absolutely have a repetitive life, would just be useful to know how to balance things in order to not live with regrets in the future.
Once we feel our life is dull, we are already one step ahead to make the change happen.
Once we realize we are not satisfied anymore with our routine, it is the right moment to look for alternatives to fill up our days and feel proud of ourselves.
What if we had a language course, a clay workshop, or any other skills we always desired to achieve?
SIGNAL NUMBER TWO: We complain...a lot!
We start our days being sad about what comes next in our schedule.
We feel awful, in such a low mood, and kind of rage for what is coming next in our daily routine.
We start, we keep and never finish complaining about something we are not happy about.
We are trapped in that complaining loop, no matter what. Every activity, good or bad for us is just another occasion to have our complaints glory!

If we spend 80% of our days, complaining about our job, our lack of learning, etc..it’s probably because we are overwhelmed by our comfort zone without even noticing it
Complaining is part of being human.
But when complaining is our only way to confront life, it represents toxic behavior for our personal and career growth.
What if instead of complaining about our body mass, we start a workout program? What about that job that lets us feel off just thinking about it, maybe it's time to take action and start looking for a better much-preferred solution
SIGNAL NUMBER THREE: We fear the change!
Change is our biggest fear in life but when it becomes a real struggle, that's where we should be scared!
Changing our routine is something we keep rejecting. Anything that is new for us, makes us shattered. We don’t feel ready for any action and consequence that is out of our control and knowledge.
Change is scary but also something that at some point we have to deal with.
We can't let that fear of the unknown grab us taking us away from the great experience we can have by dealing with the change.
Change, in both good and bad ways, translates into knowledge that we acquire and experience we pro
