5 steps to master communication
and reach success

SONIA VITIELLO| the 17th of Aug 2023

Each day, we engage in communication from the very instant we wake up in the morning until the final moments before drifting off at night.
Body language, facial expressions, and words are all part of the communication.

Communication may change based on our target audience, but the result we want to obtain will always be the same: capture our audience's attention in order to achieve our goals.

Communication requires clear speaking and empathic listening to be effective.
Many things, can affect our communication, such as our mood, our physical state, and more.
But with a bit of practice comes success, and here are some tips that can help you master your communication

1. Know your audience

Think about your audience as the main subject of your conversation. You know them, you know what they like and what they want to hear.

Are they interested in food? maybe you should start your conversation by mentioning the delicious tacos you had last night in central London, this will certainly call their attention to your words.

2. Keep it short and sweet

Why do we use too many big words to explain a simple concept?

Please, stop doing that!

Using complex words may let you look professional, but that's not exactly close to what you planned when you decided to host that webinar about AI.

You want to teach something to your audience, and you need them to follow every word you say out there. You need to cool down your pitch. Before being lawyers, CEO, and funders, we are humans and we love learning in a simple way.

3. Think about the best way to share your message.

Are you looking for feedback regarding a project that you never shared before?

If you require your message to be thought through, is probably better to send an email, instead of a call or an in-person meeting.

Explaining your point of view on bullet points by adding related headlines; can help your audience understand and better follow your message.

Let's see the following example:

What do we want to achieve?

  • objective 01

  • objective 02

Try to always plan your message before sending it over. Ask yourself the question: WHO? WHAT?, WHY?, WHEN?, HOW? That can be your main structure for every conversation and decision you take in life.

4. Involve your audience, exchange your knowledge

Teaching is the best way to learn something.

Before teaching something to a wide or small group, we do research and we share our findings.

To make sure that your audience is listening you need to keep them engaged.

Something you can do, is to ask questions such as "What do you think of this?" "what would you do...?" "Did it ever happen to you?"

Asking questions related to the topic makes the exchange of information natural.

Take this example as a way to involve your audience in your conversation, you teach them something and they can confirm they understood by summarising what they just learned from you.

5. Make eye contact

Eye contact seems to be something obvious during a conversation but is not.

Many times while focusing on what to say we forget to look into our audience's eyes and in doing that, we lose a big part of the communication's efficiency.

Through eye contact, we can not only show how much we are confident but we can especially catch if our audience is understanding our message, fully, in part, or not at all.

Looking at our audience's facial expressions we can feel if our conversation is enjoyable, confusing, or against our audience's ideals.

Understanding how our audience feels about the information we are sharing,  is important to make the right conversation.

In conclusion

Everyone can master communication if they practice so.

Effective communication means simplicity, and being aware of your target audience's interests and weaknesses is something to consider too as you can make a conversation out of it.

Remember to keep eye contact while talking to someone, smile, and don't be afraid, every small conversation is a lesson for a bigger one!
