Summary

Many people struggle with motivation. There are many reasons why, at some point in life, we may lose or don't find the desire to complete our tasks.

  • You may lack enjoyment: Your tasks are repetitive and your effort seems not paying you off

  • The sudden and unexpected changes put you down: losing a job or someone close to you. Any new challenge might make you doubt yourself, you may not see your purpose in life.

  • Mental health conditions: depression and anxiety may also affect the way you approach life. We are stuck with our doubts and can't find the energy to get up from bed in the morning.

The power of self-motivation

The most powerful tool you need to put yourself together is self-motivation. Self-motivation comes with meditation and practice. Before practicing, ask yourself a few questions:

Motivation is important to pursue everything in your life.

With motivation, you can achieve goals, solve problems, change old habits, and cope with new challenges and opportunities.

There are a few things that can help you get your motivation and to keep control of it.

For motivation...this way!

1) SET UP GOALS, NO CHORES

Decide and write down what you want to achieve. Be real, think about something that you want and you're ready to take every needed step to get there.
Get rid of your chores, forget about the "do your best", and be determined! Do you want to walk 10000 steps per day? write it down and it will help you and your brain to be ready for it. When you note your goals you can also think of what is most enjoyable about them.
e.g. " satisfaction of achievement".
In this way, you give a boost to your mood and creativity.
There are many online tools that help you plan and track your goals and achievements. My favourite is Google Tasks which you can also have on your phone but I also use Notion.

2) REWARD YOURSELF

Working hard shouldn't burn you out, you need to enjoy your achievements.
A good technique to feel proud and make you more productive is to reward yourself. Treat yourself after your achievement can help you overcome your lack of motivation. Be mindful of threats, you want them to be effective in the long term. Giving uncertain rewards works better than assuring them. How many times you were tempted by clicking on "you may win 10K if you fill up our survey"?
That's how websites like Stickk, help you achieve your goals. Try it out, and enjoy your progress.

3) SUSTAIN PROGRESS

If you don't want to risk burnout, you need to have a good progress rhythm. One step at a time you can reach your goals. Write down a few tasks per day or week. Don't overwhelm yourself with all the things you need to do. Give yourself time.  If you start with a list of 10 things to do in 24 hours, you may give up before even starting. There is a big tendency to surrender in the middle. Before planning you should be mindful of your time and capacity. Give yourself two or three tasks per day and you will increase your chances of achieving them. Check out your progress "You completed the 50%" and try to push it forward.

4) BE INSPIRED BY OTHERS

Sometimes, seeing others succeed can put you down but you should take them as an example. People need us and we need them to progress in life. By giving advice to other people you take the advice and learn from it. Sharing your knowledge is the best thing you can do to learn and achieve your goals.

Key takeaways

Self-motivating yourself is the hardest step you need to take to progress in your life. Before taking any action, you need to think and put on the table every scenario possible. Planning and meditating are your must-have tools to achieve your goals. Don't be harsh on yourself, everything takes time. Taking action is as important as reaching your goals. Don't neglect the power of community. Find inspiration in others, and become a better version of yourself.
